A new record and a redescription of Brania subterranea (Polychaeta, Syllidae): Léopold III Biological Station, Laing Island. Contribution n° 18 = Une nouvelle station et une rédescription de Brania subterranea (Polychaeta, Syllidae): Station Biologique Léopold III, Ile de Laing. Contribution n° 18 OMA
Govaere, J.C.R..
Brania subterranea (Hartmann-Schroeder, 1956), recorded for the first time from the West Pacific coasts, is studied by scanning electron microscopy. A well developed nuchal organ with cilia bearing disk-like enlargements could be demonstrated. The entrance of the pharynx carries ten papillae and a circlet of ordinary cilia. The fine structure of the simple and compound bristles and also their distribution in correlation with the length of the specimens is given in detail.

From intracratonic extension to mature spreading in back arc basins: Examples from the Okinawa, Lau, North Fiji basins ArchiMer
Auzende, Jean-marie; Boespflug, Xavier; Bougault, Henri; Dosso, Laure; Foucher, Jean-paul; Joron, Jean-louis; Ruellan, Etienne; Sibuet, Jean-claude.
Three cruises (POP 1, SEAPSO 3 and SEAPSO 4) carried out during the "Tour du Monde" of the R.V. Jean Charcot allow us to obtain new structural and geochemical data for the Okinawa, North Fiji and Lau basins. Taken together, the structural and geochemical data illustrate a difference in evolution stages of these sites. The less evolved stage is represented by the Okinawa basin, where accretion is evidenced only by volcanic intrusion into a thinned continental crust. The most evolved stage is illustrated in the North Fiji basin, where the present-day accretion can be directly compm·ed to the East Pacific Ridge. The Lau basin displays an intem1ediate stage with a complex system of accretionary ridges. This difference in the evolution stage is translated in...

The impact of FAD innovation on the performance of US tuna purse seine operations in the Pacific Ocean ArchiMer
Sakagawa, G.
It is generally accepted that innovations in tuna purse seine technology have affected fishing operations and the traditional measurement of fishing effort, days fished including searching time. Not much is known, however, about the actual effects of the innovations on fishing performance. Data from the us tuna purse seine fishery in the Western Pacific Ocean were used to determine the impact of drifting Fish Aggregating Devices (fads) on the performance of the us fleet. The results indicate, inter alia, a high rate of success (96%) in catching tuna and high yield rate (37 t/successful set) for fad sets. Log sets were comparable in success rate (94%) and catch rate (36 t/successful set). Unassociated sets, on the other hand, had a higher catch rate (42...

West Pacific climate and circulation over the last 160 kyr: A palaeontological and geochemical multiproxy reconstruction within the inflow path of the Indonesian Throughflow ArchiMer
Bolliet, Timothé Geoffroy.
Understanding the Earth´s present day climate and predicting its future evolution require investigation of high resolution sedimentary archives providing critical information of past oceanic and atmospheric variability. This study is based on two continuous marine sedimentary successions (Cores MD06-3067 and MD06-3075), recovered close to Mindanao Island (Philippines). The Indo-Pacific region represents a major source of heat and moisture, which are redistributed to the high latitudes by atmospheric and oceanic circulations; thus this region is a major actor in regulating global climate. The two cores investigated in this work are located within the inflow path of the Indonesian Throughflow. This ocean current provides a critical link within the...
